Activity 5 - 30 days of an Asian diet

The talk

This activity is based on Dean Ornish's talk on the world's killer diet. The talk presented a very simple premise that an Asian diet is healthier than a Western diet. Looking at Dr Ornish's website - The Ornish Spectrum - this should include a significant reduction in red meat, sugar and white flour, coupled with an increase in Omega 3 oils, fruits and vegetables.

On the website, Dr Ornish also talks about the benefits of meditation, exercise and connection.

The challenge

This challenge is about seeing if I can improve my health and well being through a rather radical change in diet, increased exercise and introducing meditation into my daily routine.

The success of this activity will be measured by two things, my weight/fitness and how I feel about my levels of stress.

The activity

So what does this all mean in relation to actions I will be undertaking:

  • Diet - for 30 days we will be completely changing our diet into an Asian diet. We have been collecting recipes over the last month or so, but if you have any suggestions please let me know.

  • Supplements - I will go back to taking fish oil tablets on a daily basis to increase my Omega 3 intake.

  • Exercise - ensuring that I get about 20 minutes a day of exercise, and longer sustained exercise at least 2 days a week.

  • Meditation - incorporate a 5 minute meditation session into my daily routine.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how I feel on a full Asian diet, noting that the definition of Asian for this exercise includes South-East Asian and mainland Asia. So we will be including Indian and Nepalese food with the Thai, Malaysian, Chinese and Japanese food we will be eating.
