My Three Words for 2019

Happy 2019! I hope that you’ve all started the New Year in a positive way – I feel a lot more positive about starting this year than 2018.If you haven’t read anything on my three words before, it comes from Chris Brogan and you can read his 2018 post for more details. I find it’s a great way to set my intentions for the year, they help keep me focused. In previous years the words were:

  • 2018 - Balance, Structure, Grow

  • 2017 – Structure, Serve, Write

  • 2016 – Be, Push, Pull

  • 2015 – Build, Strong, Focus

  • 2014 – Brave, Calm, Connect

  • 2013 – Creating, Connecting, Consolidating

  • 2012 – Do, Share, Inspire

Sometimes I find it a little difficult to select the words, but this time they came very quickly for some reason.

Aware

This is something I've already been trying to do more of since the middle of 2018, but I think it will be helpful to set it as an intention for 2019.For me, this is about being more aware of myself and others. As mentioned in my reflection yesterday, I've become a bit too critical of myself again. This drives a swag of other behaviours I'm not overly happy about, so I need to be more aware of these thoughts and reduce them. In relation to others, I want to up my game in paying attention to what is going on with other people and not placing intention on their actions.

Brave

This probably aligns to the comment about becoming overly self-critical again, but I've been playing too small for the last couple of years. This has been partly out of necessity, due to a ridiculous client workload, but there is more to it than that. So, this year I think I would benefit from having an intention around stopping myself from hiding and creating more opportunities to get out into the world.

There are already some plans afoot for this - in reality I started this about a month ago. It's an important one for me to focus on if I ever want to achieve my dream goals - although I've had a couple of realisations of late that might be shifting those as well.

Creative

Okay, to be honest, I came up with Aware and Brave first, then decided I needed a C-word to make this pop :-) But there were a half dozen I could have used, so this hasn't been simply rammed into the process. I've missed being more creative in the last couple of years. I picked it back up again in the last couple of months and realised that I can't let that lack of focus happen again.

For 2019, I'm going to focus on getting the visual side of my business running - the graphic facilitation and explainer videos being the main services. I'm finalising an explainer video about those at the moment. I would like my business to integrate more creativity, so I feel more connected to that part of myself as part of earning income.

This will make 2019 an ABC focus year - I'm thinking of it a little as back to basics for that matter. But I want it to be far from basic, I want it to be a year where I embrace my bravery and get a great start on putting more of myself into the world.
