30 Days of Leadership - 10 Years On

The procrastination continued this month, this reflection should have come out on the 1st of July. There are many things distracting me right now and I’m not apologising about the delay - it is what it is at this point in time. On the plus side, preparation for our circus showcase at the end of the month is progressing well :-)

Leadership was mainly based on two TED Talks - Barry Schwartz on our loss of wisdom and David Logan on tribal leadership. But, Susan Cain’s talk on the power of introverts came out just before this, so it had to be included as well.

Sketchnote reflecting on 30 days of Leadership which outlines the key points from the three TED Talks and the intention of the activity.
Sketchnote for 30 days of leadership showing the reflection on the activity at the time and then how I feel about it all 10 years on.

How this has evolved

Fortunately for me, I stopped managing/leading people for a living in 2013 when I left government employment. I’ve still had a leadership role with some Board positions, one of which I still have. But, I do still need to maintain focus on the tribal leadership in my training - which I sometimes forget to be honest. The Board position and some of my training is why this was challenging to reflect upon. I don’t feel I’ve been doing a good job of helping move people forward lately, if anything my language has been way too 2/3 focused than it should be.

So, it’s timely for me to reflect on this and think about how I can do better. And that’s one of the reasons for doing this, to remind myself of the lessons from the project that I have somewhat forgotten.

As for practical wisdom, I think that is still an area of focus for me. The moral will and moral skill is still a huge idea that I feel we need to improve for everyone. Sadly, I really feel the pandemic responses, challenges and impacts have significantly reduced this - while we are functioning without mask mandates as this new wave sweeps through our community! Yeesh!
